Our regulatory approach

The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) has a range of regulatory responsibilities and powers under the Privacy Act 1988 (Privacy Act), the Freedom of Information Act 1982 (FOI Act) and other legislation.

In this section you will find policy documents outlining our approach to the use of these regulatory powers. These documents are designed to guide the OAIC’s decision-making process on taking regulatory action and assist entities, with obligations under the Privacy Act or FOI Act, and members of the public to understand the OAIC’s regulatory approach.
